Shivabalayogi Adivarapupeta 1963

The Meaning of Yogi

Shivabalayogi is a yogi, one who has attained Self realization through meditation in samadhi, a state of consciousness in which the mind is still and there is no awareness of body or time.

His Childhood

He was born in the small, south Indian village of Adivarapupeta.  At age fourteen, he experienced samadhi.

Stories from Childhood

“Swamiji did not care about anybody, only the truth.  Even when he was a child, Swami was much stronger than you.”

Initiation into Tapas

Sathyaraju was only fourteen when, by an irrigation canal of the Godavari River, his Divine Guru initiated him into tapas, twelve years of meditation in samadhi, the state of enlightenment.

Obstacles in Tapas

“All the pain and suffering that one has to undergo is a test. God tests. If one passes these tests then one can reach God.”

Dikh and Yuga Tapas

Shivabalayogi mastered tapas facing all four cardinal directions (dikh tapas) and completed a full twelve-year cycle (yuga tapas).

Completion of Tapas

“Swamiji did not do tapas with any desire for himself.  Under such circumstances, the person who does tapas becomes an agent of God and can serve all people.”

His Name

He became known as Shivabalayogi, “Yogi Devoted to Shiva and Parvati,” but he simply referred to himself as Swamiji.

His Prior Lives

Shivabalayogi attained Self realization in many prior lives.  He reincarnated to do tapas again to serve this world and many others.

His Work

He often explained that his mission was to reduce the tensions in the world.  He allowed others to experience his Self realization (darshan), he empowered people to practice meditation, he gave practical experiences of spiritual reality (bhava samadhi), and he evoked healing.

His Travel

For three decades he traveled tirelessly throughout India and Sri Lanka.  Beginning in 1987, he visited numerous cities in England and the United States.  Everywhere he conducted public programs consisting of meditation and spiritual song (bhajans).

His Mahasamadhi

On March 29, 1994, he dropped his physical form and attained the final samadhi, mahasamadhi.  His body is interred in Adivarapupeta.
