The Inner Guru
“The outside guru guides and shows you the path. The internal guru gives you visions. It is the guru inside who appears to you and gives you darshan.”
“The outside guru is a yogi. The inner guru is God, Shankara Bhagavan.”
“You would not be able to achieve what you want without a guru. Trying to do it by yourself is aham brahmasya [the idea that “I am God”].”
“Know truth through meditation, then you yourself will know who you are, your religion, your purpose in life, and your nature. Do not believe what others say and become a slave to religious prejudices. Meditation is your religion. Meditation is your purpose. Meditation is your path.”
In Indian schools, children are taught the meaning of guru brahma guru vishnu guru devo maheshwara guru sakshat parabrahma tasmai sri gurave namaha. “Guru is equal to Brahma, Guru is equal to Vishnu, Guru is equal to Lord Shiva,” etc. But Swamiji used to say the verse a little differently, adding a Telugu word to give the meaning of “Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Maheshwara.”
