Shivabalayogi at age fourteen after four months of tapas.
This photo, like the previous one, was taken by a photographer from nearby Draksharama who set up a canvas, backdrop scene, complete with a line of tall Lombardy poplar trees (left, middle) which do not grow in the area.
The props on the left include a trishula (Shiva's trident), a yoga danda (forked stick used to rest the arm while counting repetitions of mantras), and a picture of Shiva.
The Telugu language writing identifies the young yogi as the "Adivarapupeta Balayogi."
Postcard-sized copies of this photo and the previous one were sold to devotees.
Many villagers believed or suspected that Sathraraju's meditation was a hoax. As a child, he had already earned a reputation as a trouble-maker, and he had no obvious prior disposition towards spiritual practice. Being from a desperately poor family, many assumed the meditation was designed to earn him a reputation as a saint so he could earn money and fame.
Perhaps the sale of these postcards contributed to the villagers' skepticism. |
